Prioritizing The Pets

German Shepherd

Pets are extensions of our families. They greet us when we get home, keep us company when we feel alone, and they are a constant source of joy in our lives. Because of this, it is easy to understand why dogs, cats and other pets become a source of contention in divorce.

My name is Tom Gurewitz. I understand the strong bond that most people form with their pets. I bring my dogs TJ and Henry to work with me in Waukegan every day. They are an important and irreplaceable member of my family, as your pet may be to you.

Illinois has changed its law regarding pets to allocation of companion animal during the dissolution of marriage.

Making The Right Decisions For You And Your Pet

Although some couples decide that one of them will have sole custody of the pet after their divorce, many choose to create a pet custody plan. I have extensive experience helping families determine the best way to share custody of domestic pets. As your attorney, some of the factors I will take into consideration when helping you create a plan are:

  • The custody schedule of your pets, if you have them
  • Your personal schedules
  • The roles each spouse played in the day-to-day life of your pet

Once I understand your situation and your goals, I will work closely with your spouse’s lawyer to negotiate a plan that is fair and in the best interests of all involved.
