Tips for navigating co-parenting issues

On Behalf of | Aug 25, 2020 | family law |

Parenting can sometimes be challenging after divorce. You may no longer be married to your ex, but you must still co-parent together, which can bring up a lot of issues. You might be spending less time with your child than you would like, or you may be dealing with residual anger and resentment regarding your divorce.

Regardless of the challenges you face, you must be able to co-parent effectively to ensure your child is well cared for. These tips can help you navigate common issues for the best possible outcome of your co-parenting situation.

Try to develop a good relationship with step-parents and new partners

Barring any problematic behaviors, your life will be much easier if you come to terms with your ex’s new relationship. While it is natural to feel resentful of the new relationship, you must accept this person if they are going to be in your child’s life. If possible, meeting your ex’s new partner could potentially ease your fears and also benefit your kids by keeping stress to a minimum.

Acknowledge your child’s emotions

Kids might feel conflicted about splitting their time between you and your ex. These emotions are normal, and you should help your child work through them. Your child may be reluctant to leave behind precious belongings, in which case you or your ex can help them pack up a few comforting items for the outing. You can also encourage them by talking about all the fun things they will do when visiting the other parent.

Know how to deal with your own negative feelings

You may also experience feelings like loneliness and sadness when spending time away from your kids. Spend time with friends and family, take up a new hobby, or start a journal to get your mind off the situation. Finding constructive ways to deal with negative emotions will benefit your family in the long run, and will allow you to build a new life.
